Registered Customs Amoy “Cash” cover to USA

1896 registered cover to USA sent via HK. The cover was sent by private boat to Hong Kong by the Amoy Customs in order to catch the trans-Pacific mail to USA. The postage was paid by the sender in cash and the 20c on 30c Hong Kong stamp was stuck by the Customs Office in Amoy to pay for overseas postage since China was not a member of the U.P.U. The stamp was cancelled in transit at Hong Kong on 5 March 1896.

SS Coptic left Hong Kong on 6 March to San Francisco. S.F. arrival date not recorded by Proud but consistent with the end of the month arrival date on reverse of the cover.
